Shakespeare in the Park

In a workshop with James Goggin last spring, we were asked to "1. Locate a site in Providence, 2. Make a sign for it." I chose to use signage to make a performance.

I was inspired by signage James did for a gallery at Tate Modern called "Untitled", in which he used an L.E.D. sign typically found on the front of a bus. I loved the idea of repurposing digital signage and the mix of high and low culture it implied.

The absurdist in me wanted to see digital signs speak in Shakespearean verse, and I imagined a scene with many signs, each being assigned a role in a play. The result is a mockup of "Shakespeare in the Park" in which the signs perform a scene from Hamlet (in which Polonius is slain by Hamlet). To add a sense of humor, I interrupted the play with some more traditional public service announcements.
